CHC40108 Certificate IV in Aged Care
Course Outline
The Certificate IV in Aged Care is for people who are already employed in the aged care industry and have a Certificate III in Aged Care Work. The course will develop the individual’s knowledge and skills to undertake work and team leadership roles and assist with medications within aged care residential services.
Course Structure
The Certificate IV in Aged Care consists of 15 units of competency: 10 core units and 5 elective units. Elective units should be chosen to reflect the work role and required duties.
The units cover topics such as:
- Implementing falls interventions
- Working within a legal and ethical framework
- Occupational health and safety
- Supporting the elderly with complex care needs
- Maintaining information systems in the workplace
- Workplace supervision and leadership
- Medication Administration
- Facilitating links with other services and advocating for clients
- provision of support services to clients with dementia
- Occupational health and safety
Course Delivery and Duration
The Certificate IV in Aged Care is delivered completely online, allowing students to study at their own pace. Dedicated trainer support and interactive forums, blogs, online chat maximises the learning experience and learning outcomes. Students will also be supported by trainer visits to their workplace to assess workplace based skills.
Assessments
Assessments for this qualification are undertaken progressively throughout the course duration. The assessments enable the individual to demonstrate the application of the key knowledge and skills for the units of competency. Assessments consist of:

Pre-requisites
To gain entry into CHC40108 Certificate IV in Aged Care a candidate must be recognised as competent, through a recognised training program or recognition process, against the following compulsory units from CHC30208 Certificate III in Aged Care (or equivalent):
• CHCAC318A Work effectively with older people
• CHCAC319A Provide support to people living with dementia
• CHCCS411A Work effectively in the community sector
• CHCICS303A Support individual health and emotional well being
• CHCPA301B Deliver care services using a palliative approach
• HLTAP301A Recognise healthy body systems in a health care context
Selection Criteria
Prospective participants:
- must have a minimum of 12 months experience in the aged care industry and be currently employed
- must have a strong interest and commitment to the rights and interests of the elderly
- must have the right professional attitude to support and lead others
- may be required to complete a language, literacy and numeracy assessment
- must have access to a computer and the internet.

Employment opportunities are excellent for aged care workers, with work available in hostels, high care & low care residential facilities and other aged care community centres.
