CHC30208 Certificate III in Aged Care

Course Outline
The Certificate III in Aged Care is regarded as the entry level qualification for people who want to work in the aged care sector in a range of residential aged care facilities such as nursing homes and hostels.  Aged care workers support older people to maintain the greatest level of health and wellbeing through the provision of personal care and support of activities of daily living.

Course Structure
The Certificate III in Aged Care consists of 14 units of competency: 10 compulsory and 4 elective units.  Elective units should be chosen to reflect the work role and required duties.
 
The units cover topics such as:
  • Overview of the aged care sector
  • Occupational health and safety
  • Providing personal care
  • Aged Care documentation
  • Caring for older people with dementia and/or disabilities
  • Working with culturally diverse residents and staff
  • Supporting the older persons psychosocial needs – grief and loss, recreation and leisure and sexuality
  • Using a palliative approach to in aged care
Delivery and Duration
The Certificate III in Aged Care can be delivered as a traineeship or as a classroom based course.

A traineeship combines paid employment with gaining a qualification, combining on the job work experience and formal training.  Traineeships may be full or part-time and are usually taken over a 12 month period.

Classroom based delivery is structured over 4 days per week for 10 weeks of classroom sessions plus 150 hours of full time work placements at Mercy Health’s community and aged care facilities.

For individuals who have worked in the industry for some time and have the requisite skills and knowledge may apply for Recognition Assessment.

Assessments
Assessments for this qualification are undertaken progressively throughout the course duration. The assessments enable the individual to demonstrate the application of the key knowledge and skills for the units of competency. Assessments consist of:

·          Demonstration
·          Observation
·          Supervisor Testimonials
·          Case Scenarios
 
For individuals who have worked in the industry for some time and have the requisite skills and knowledge may apply for Recognition Assessment

Selection Criteria
Prospective participants:
  • must have a strong interest and commitment to the rights and interests of the elderly
  • must have the right professional attitude to support and care for others
  • must be physically capable of performing domestic duties and a range of manual handling tasks
  • may be required to complete a language, literacy and numeracy assessment.
A national police check is mandatory before undertaking practical work placement.

Employment Opportunities
Employment opportunities are excellent for aged care workers, with work available in hostels, high care & low care residential facilities and other aged care community centres.

Course Fees
Traineeship
There are no course fees under the traineeship program for eligible candidates.
 
Partially funded courses
Tuition fee is $300 per person. Discounts are available for Concession Card holders.
 

To be eligible for a Government subsidised place, applicants must be:

1.       An Australian citizen or holder of a permanent visa; or a holder of a Special Category Visa (sub-class  444); or East Timorese asylum seeker; or a holder of a Temporary Protection Visa; AND
2.       Aged under 20 years of age on 1 January in the year of course commencement; OR
3.       Aged 20 - 25 years or over on 1 January in the year the course commences, and you do not hold a prior qualification at the Certificate III level or higher; OR
4.       Aged 25 years or over on 1 January in the year of the course commences and you are a retrenched worker seeking a qualification higher than the highest qualification held.

 
Full fee paying
The course fee for classroom based delivery is: $1990.00 per participant.  A range of flexible payment options are available.
