CHC30308 Certificate III in Home and Community Care
Course Outline
The CHC30308 Certificate III in Home and Community Care is for people who want to work in the community sector caring for client/s in the home.Clients may include the elderly, individual with a disability or any member of the community who require support in their home. Individuals develop the skills and knowledge to support the client to maintain the greatest level of independence through the provision of personal care and a range of home care services.
Course Structure
The CHC30308 Certificate III in Home and Community Care consists of 14 units of competency: 9 compulsory and 5 elective units. Elective units are chosen to reflect the work role and required duties.
The units cover topics such as:
- Overview of the home and community care sector including structure, legislation, ACFI, Role of carers, service delivery models, Accreditation Standards
- Overview of aged care
- Occupational health and safety : Acts, Regulations, Incidents, Hazards and Risks
- Documentation requirements in home and community care
- Providing personal care
- Caring for older people with dementia and disabilities
- Working with culturally diverse clients and staff
- Promoting client independence
- Food safety procedures
- First Aid
- Privacy and confidentiality
- Working effectively with carers including the client's family
Course Delivery and Duration
The CHC30308 Certificate III in Home and Community Care may be delivered as a classroom based course or a traineeship. Those who are not currently working in the industry will be required to complete 120 hours of practical placement at Mercy Health’s aged care facilities (low care only).
Both the traineeship and classroom based delivery is structured over 1 evening per week for 10 months. The program may be completed sooner depending on experience and recognition assessment.
Assessments
Assessments for this qualification are undertaken progressively throughout the course duration. The assessments enable the individual to demonstrate the application of the key knowledge and skills for the units of competency.

Selection Criteria
Prospective participants:
- should have a strong interest in caring for the elderly and the right professional attitude
- must be able to work autonomously
- must be physically capable of performing domestic duties and a range of manual handling tasks
- may be required to complete a language, literacy and numeracy assessment.
A national police check is mandatory before undertaking practical work placement.

Traineeship
There are no course fees under the traineeship program for eligible candidates.
