Initial Registration for Overseas Qualified Nurses (IRON)
Division 1, Division 2, Division 3, Psychiatric Division 1 Nurses, Midwifery Division 1 Nurses
Overseas qualified nurses seeking registration in Victoria may be required to complete an Initial Registration Course for Overseas Nurses.
Applicants seeking nursing registration in Victoria must apply to the Nurses Board of Victoria before enrolling in to this course.

Course Outline
The IRON Program is a 12 week course specially designed to fulfil registration requirement for Division 1, Division 2, and Division 3 of the Nurses Board of Victoria.
Course Structure
The course is designed for 480 hours and will be offered full time over the 12 weeks.
The course consists of both theoretical and clinical components. Both theory and clinical components require satisfactory completion.
Theoretical Component
Consists of a minimum of 80 hours of theory.
This includes;
• Australian Health Care Systems
• The Nursing Profession
• Cultural, legal and ethical issues
• Clinical Nursing/Midwifery skills
The Theory component will be undertaken by a combination of delivery modes such as;
• Lectures / Tutorials
• Self directed learning packages
• Workbook activities
• On line
Clinical Component
All participants will undertake 10 weeks of fully supervised clinical experiences in one of the Mercy Health Acute Care facilities. Some participants in the Division 1 and Division 2 programs may be allocated to a rotation in an Aged Care Facility.
Each participant is required to demonstrate competencies that meet Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council National Competency standards. To ensure that the participants are practicing as a beginning level practitioner, they must satisfactorily complete clinical skills assessments and clinical competencies.
Selection Criteria
Prospective participants:
Selection is based on the following criteria
Phase 1
• Must provide evidence of a NBV approval letter indicating which course they have permission to complete. Including any requirements as stated within the letter from the NBV. This NBV letter is valid for two years from the date of issue;
• A transcript of the successful completion of an English Proficiency courses at a level prescribed appropriate by the Nurses Board of Victoria;
• Must provide an up to date Curriculum Vitae; and
• A short letter outlining the reason for requesting entry to the course;
Phase 2
• An interview.
Upon enrolment.
• A Police Clearance check form your country of residence; and
• Proof of Immunisation for Hepatitis B, Tetanus/Diphtheria/Whooping Cough(Clinical Placement requirement)
Course Outcomes
This course aims to prepare participants to be eligible for registration as a Division 1, Division 2 or Division 3 registered nurse with the Nurses Board of Victoria.
