HLT32507 Certificate III in Health Services Assistance

Course Outline
This course provides the range of essential skills and knowledge for healthcare workers who provide support to the staff who care for clients/patients in the hospital environment.  These workers provide support services to nursing staff and ward clerks with duties such as food service, transportation of clients and ward housekeeping.

Course Structure
The Certificate III in Health Services Assistance consists of 15 units of competency: 6 compulsory units and 9 elective units.  Elective units should be chosen to reflect the work role and required duties.

The units cover topics such as:
•    Food safety procedures
•    Preparing and making beds
•    General cleaning duties
•    Transporting patients
•    Assisting with the movement of patients
•    Overview of the health care sector
•    Communicating in health including medical language
•    Occupational health and safety
•    Infection control procedures

Delivery Options
The Certificate III in Health Services Assistance can be delivered as a traineeship or as a classroom based course.

A traineeship combines paid employment with gaining a qualification, combining on the job work experience and formal training.  Traineeships may be full or part-time and are usually taken over a 12 month period.

Classroom based delivery is structured over 3 days per week for 9 weeks of classroom sessions plus 150 hours of full time work placements at Mercy Health’s hospitals and health care facilities.

For individuals who have worked in the industry for some time and have the requisite skills and knowledge may apply for Recognition Assessment.

Selection Criteria
Prospective participants:
•    must have the right professional attitude to care and support others
•    must be physically capable of performing domestic duties and a range of manual handling tasks
•    must be at least 18 years of age
•    may be required to complete a language, literacy and numeracy assessment

A national police check is mandatory before undertaking practical work placement.

Employment Opportunities
There are many employment opportunities for health support staff in public and private hospitals, health care services and aged care facilities.

Job roles include: health support worker, patient services assistant/attendant, ward assistant and orderly.

Course Fees
Full fee paying
The course fee for classroom based delivery is: $1990 per participant.  A range of flexible payment options are available.

Partially funded courses
Tuition fee is $400.00 per person or $120.00 for Concession Card holders.

To be eligible for a Government subsidised place, applicants must be:
1. An Australian citizen or holder of a permanent visa; or a holder of a Special Category Visa (sub-class 444); or East Timorese asylum seeker; or a holder of a Temporary Protection Visa; AND
2. Aged under 20 years of age on 1 January in the year of course commencement; OR
3. Aged 20 - 25 years on 1 January in the year the course commences, and you do not hold a prior qualification at the Certificate IV level or higher; OR
4. Aged 25 years or over on 1 January in the year of the course commences and you are a retrenched worker seeking a qualification higher than the highest qualification held.
