CHC30208 Certificate III in Aged Care
Course Outline
The Certificate III in Aged Care is regarded as the entry level qualification for people who want to work in the aged care sector in a range of residential aged care facilities such as nursing homes and hostels. Aged care workers support older people to maintain the greatest level of health and wellbeing through the provision of personal care and support of activities of daily living.
Course Structure
The Certificate III in Aged Care consists of 14 units of competency: 10 compulsory and 4 elective units. Elective units are chosen to reflect the work role and required duties.
The units cover topics such as:
- Overview of the aged care sector including structure, legislation, role of carers, service delivery models and Accreditation Standards
- Occupational health and safety: Acts, Regulations, Incidents, Hazards and Risks
- Manual Handling including the correct use of lifting hoists, stand lifters
- Providing personal care including; vital sign monitoring, urinalysis, blood glucose monitoring
- Aged Care documentation including ACFI
- Caring for older people with dementia and/or disabilities
- Working with culturally diverse residents and staff
- Supporting the older persons psychosocial needs – physical and cognitive changes, grief and loss, recreation and leisure, sexuality, religious and cultural aspects
- Older persons rights and responsibilties, principles of empowerment, guardianship and power of attorney, elder abuse
- Using a palliative approach in aged care
- Communication , behaviour awareness, management, conflict resolution
- Teamwork, problem solving, professional development
- Privacy and confidentiality
Delivery and Duration
The Certificate III in Aged Care is delivered as a traineeship.
A traineeship combines paid employment with gaining a qualification, combining on the job work experience and formal training. Traineeships may be full or part-time and are usually taken over a 12 month period.
Classroom-based delivery is structured over 3 days per week for 10 weeks of classroom sessions plus 150 hours of full time work placements at Mercy Health's Community and Aged Care facilitites.
For individuals who have worked in the industry for some time and have the requisite skills and knowledge may apply for Recognition Assessment.
Assessments
Assessments for this qualification are undertaken progressively throughout the course duration. The assessments enable the individual to demonstrate the application of the key knowledge and skills for the units of competency. Assessments consist of:

For individuals who have worked in the industry for some time and have the requisite skills and knowledge may apply for Recognition Assessment

Selection Criteria
Prospective participants:
- must have a strong interest and commitment to the rights and interests of the elderly
- must have the right professional attitude to support and care for others
- must be physically capable of performing domestic duties and a range of manual handling tasks
- be employed at a residential aged care facility
A national police check is mandatory before undertaking practical work placement.
Employment Opportunities
Employment opportunities are excellent for aged care workers, with work available in hostels, high care and low care residential facilities and other aged care community centres.
Course Fees
Full fee paying
Course fee is $1990.00 per person (GST exempt). A non-refundable fee of $250.00 is payable to secure the enrolment. A range of flexible payment options are available for the balance
